While the source of the fire is still unknown, shop owners are still counting the cost at the Iranian souq count after the devastation
The souq is near Ajman Speciality Hospital and a grocery market in the city’s industrial area. Over 100 shops were destroyed in a massive fire which broke out at a souq in Ajman on Wednesday.
The fire started at the Iranian souq, in Ajman’s new industrial area, around 6.30pm, sending plumes of black smoke billowing over the emirate.
About 100 firefighters, including crew from Dubai, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain helped to extinguish the blaze by 9pm.
Nobody was hurt but the souq, which had been closed for four months as a preventative measure against Covid-19, was extensively damaged. On Thursday, director-general of the emirate’s civil defence, Brig Abdulaziz Al Shamsi, said 125 shops in the popular souq were destroyed.
